A 4WD variant of the redesigned Hilux was introduced in January 1979. The newer model had similar dimensions to its predecessor, but the front and rear tracks were wider. It also had a torsion bar suspension, which was still connected to a double wishbone design. In its 4WD variant – not offered with any engines smaller than the two-litre “18R” – some of the technology was similar to that of the larger Toyota Land Cruiser. It had a live, leaf-sprung front axle, unlike the one used on rear-wheel drive Hiluxes. The four-wheel drive models were discontinued in July 1983, but some 2WD models continued production along with the next generation models. From September 1979, the L series diesel engine was available on both the 2WD and 4WD versions. In Japan, the Hilux was joined with the all-new Toyota MasterAce, which shared load carrying duties with the Hilux at Toyota Store locations.

4WD models have the 2-litre 18R-C engine with 63 kW (86 PS) in Australian models, while rear-wheel drive models have the 1.6-litre 12R engine. Australian Hilux 4WDs could be 130 km/h (81 mph).

In North American markets, the Hilux (known as the Pickup) was available with four-wheel drive. It was equipped with a solid front axle and leaf suspension. The body was redesigned to include single-round headlights and a less complex design. The RF1A transfer case drove this new 4WD setup. Dual or triple transfer cases can duplicate the low-range reduction portion of this transfer case, making it unique. Due to this, the overall gear ratio is much lower. This was the first Hilux to be available in that country with an automatic transmission.
